Costa Calma Overview
Costa Calma is a resort in the South East of the island of Fuerteventura, around a 1 hour drive south from the airport at Puerto del Rosario. It is located at the top of the Jandía peninsula. The resort is quite a bit smaller and hence quieter than that of Fuerteventura’s largest resort at Corralejo at the north of the island. However, the resort still has quite a few good amenities in terms of eating out and nightlife.Costa Calma has year round conditions of warm water.
The spring/summer months bring great weather and the famed trade winds. The windiest season in Fuerteventura is in the summer, between April and September, when a big high pressure stays over the Atlantic and a low over the Sahara. However, there is generally wind all year around with it just being less reliable outside of this main wind season.
The winds in the south of the island are however accelerated by a thermal effect caused by the surrounding hills, and whereas the wind in the north of the island at Corralejo tends to be lighter (around 20-30 knots), summer wind conditions in the south can regularly get up to 40 knots
However, this does make Costa Calma a safer bet in winter than the north of the island where the winds are lighter.Despite the higher winds found in Costa Calma, the cross offshore nature of the wind from the left provides pancake flat water.
A windsurf or kite holiday to Costa Calma is suitable for all levels and holiday types, including families, singles and couples, of all abilities.
It is recommended to wear surf shoes and a shorty in summer and a light weight wetsuit for the winter months
The Sailing locations around Costa Calma
Costa Calma is home to two windsurfing locations and one kitesurfing.
Located fairly centrally in Costa Calma is Costa Calma Beach, where the ION Club windsurfing centre is located.
About 2 kms further north on the outskirts of Costa Calma is Matas Bay , where there is the Matas Bay windsurfing and kitesurfing centre. Matas Bay is the most northern beach of the southern half of the island which receives the thermal wind effect of the hills.Best Suited To
Costa Calma Beach and Matas Bay are suitable locations for every level of windsurfer, from those making their first entry to the most advanced practitioners.
Kitesurfers are best suited to Matas Bay only, because there is wind at the water’s edge, whereas there is a wind shadow at Costa Calma Beach for the first 100m or so.
