Le Morne Overview
Le Morne lies at the southern part of the island, an hour’s drive south of the capital Port Louis. Towering above Le Morne is the iconic land mark of Le Morne Brabant, a flat topped mountain that overlooks the sailing area.
The Sailing in Le Morne
Quite possibly one of the most visually stunning windsurfing and kitesurfing locations in the world, the sailing at Le Morne takes place in a huge lagoon, that is protected from the ocean by a barrier reef.
The southeast tradewinds blow most consistently between the months of April to October, at an average strength of 15 to 30 knots – force 4 to 6 beaufort. This is actually the winter season, where the air temperature is between 20 and 26 degrees centigrade, and the water between 23 and 26 degrees. The clean winds blow mostly cross shore from the left facing out to sea.
One of the key advantages of Le Morne is the diversity in sailing conditions. Kite and windsurf beginners are catered for with shallow lagoons. There are windy flat water conditions for Intermediates to advanced sailors that want to blast about or practice freestyle, and entry level waves for those new to wave sailing. Le Morne also provides more advanced waves, leading right up to some of the finest wave sailing conditions in the world for the most advanced sailors.
Best Suited To
Le Morne provides conditions for all levels of sailor and all disciplines.
The hotels are ideal for honeymooners and romantic couples, but singles may get bored unless they are involved in windsurfing or kitesurfing. The resorts are family friendly, with some more than others better suited to children.Hazards
At high tides the currents within the lagoon and on the reefs can be very strong, and can take the sailor out to sea through the channel between the reefs. Paying attention to the safety recommendations of the hire centres that operate the rescue services is important.
The sea bed can be very shallow in parts, and it is advisable to wear protective booties to protect feet from the coral.Pros
• Flat water lagoon areas at most tidal states
• Blue Water
• Consistent trade winds
• Entry level wavesailing conditions
• World class wavesailing options
• Well stocked kitesurf and windsurf hire and teaching centres
• Rescue services
• Close proximity of hotelsCons
• Strong currents at high tides
• Booties often required to protect feet against coral
• More expensive to visit due to remoteness of island
• Very expensive rescue services if not hiring equipment locallyLe Morne Windsurfing
The windsurfing launch area is in front of the ION Club windsurfing centre at Main Beach. Directly off the beach is the big lagoon, which is protected by the reef about 600m away from the beach. The beach shelves gently and is sandy.
The lagoon is sailable at all tides except when it is really low, when it becomes too shallow to windsurf. The tidal range is about 1.2m max.
In the mornings when the winds are usually a bit lighter, beginners can learn in the shallow and sandy flat water just in front the of the windsurf centre. This is also an ideal opportunity to take out kids windsurfing. As the wind rises in the morning, this becomes the perfect launching spot for intermediate and advanced windsurfers to launch and blast in and out in cross shore conditions, The water remains flat until mid to high tide, when a surface chop develops on the water. There is no shorebreak.
As it gets windier the area is then shared with kitesurfers who either launch at the Main Beach or sail upwind from the Kitesurf training area around the corner to the left.
There are a few spots in front of the Main Beach that get reformed waves rolling through to stand up and break. These are generally knee to waist high,, and provide a safe learning environment for those who have never sailed in waves before. If the winds are light, it is possible to take a windsup out to play in these smaller waves.
At high tide the current can be very strong, and can take the sailor out through the channel between the reefs if they get into trouble. There is a lookout at the ION Centre, and a rescue boat, but unless you are hiring your equipment from the centre, you will be charged a high price to be rescued. If the tide is very high and the wind very strong, coupled to a large outer ocean swell, then the ION Club centre will order its clients off the water, and no rescue cover will be available.
A shorty wetsuit is recommended in the winter months, as well as booties to protect your feet from the coral if it is shallow. These can be hired from the ION Club.
Wave Sailing
The wavesailing options at Le Morne are extensive and world class. This is the ideal location for both wavesailing beginners, as well as the best wavesailors in the world, who can push their limits when the conditions are big.

Manawa is located at the most exposed point of Mauritius right on the south west tip of the land mass. It therefore receives the biggest swell, and because the wave breaks into a deep channel, the face of the wave is less steep, and the wave tends to crumble rather than throw you forward. It is an easy wave to Read more...
Platin Rouge
This is a wave for the more advanced, as it can get very shallow, especially at low tide. Being inside of the main reef, the wave is smaller than the other breaks.
Chameaux
Chameaux is positioned at the start of the long wall that becomes One Eye.
The wave is hollow and really shallow, and therefore suited to advanced wave sailors with little chance of coming off their boards. The wind is cross shore from the right when riding the wave.Best Gear To Use

Once the tradewinds are blowing force 4 to 5,, the most popular board style and size is a 95 to 105 litre freewave, with freewave sails up to 6.7. When the winds are blowing over 20 knots (force 5 to 6), 76 to 86 freewave boards can be used.
Advanced wave riders
Full wave boards for those sailing the wave breaks
Those bringing their own gear to Mauritius tend to leave their equipment rigged up outside their hotel rooms, which although officially not allowed by the hotels, seems to be tolerated.

Le Morne Kitesurfing
Le Morne has a vast area ideal for kitesurfing for all levels. The kiting area can be split into three main areas:
There is a 'beginners' kite lagoon, which is located around the corner to the left of the Main Beach. The various kitesurfing training schools are based here, including the ION Club kite centre (which is affiliated with the ION windsurf centre around the corner to the right at the Main Beach).
The lagoon is sandy bottomed and typically knee deep. The very flat water and onshore wind makes it the safest spot to learn, but it is still recommended for beginners to wear booties should they encounter any coral., shells or marine life.To the South is the vast 7km long lagoon, providing a great deal of space to find your own area away from other kiters. There are however some very shallow areas to watch out for at low tide.
Around the corner to the right of the beginners lagoon is Main Beach. This is the most popular area for freeride and freestyle kiters, where the wind is cross shore. This is also the area where kiters pass through to make their way to some of the wave breaks.
The area in front of the Main beach is also shared with windsurfers, but with 600m between the beach and the outer reef, there is plenty of room for everyone. As the wind rises in the morning, the Main Beach becomes a good launching spot for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers to launch and blast in and out in cross shore conditions, The water remains flat until mid to high tide, when a surface chop develops on the water. There is no shorebreak.
There are a few spots in front of the Main Beach that get reformed waves rolling through to stand up and break. These are generally knee to waist high,, and provide a safe learning environment for those who have never kited in waves before.
At high tide the current can be very strong, and can take the kiter out through the channel between the reefs if they get into trouble. There is a lookout at the ION Centre at the Main beach, and a rescue boat, but unless you are hiring your equipment from the ION kite centre, you will be charged a high price to be rescued. If the tide is very high and the wind very strong, coupled to a large outer ocean swell, then the ION Club centre will order its clients off the water, and no rescue cover will be available.
