Paynesville is a popular holiday destination on the Gippsland lakes located about 300km (3.5 hours drive) east of Melbourne.
The Gippsland Lakes are renowned as the boating capital of Victoria with literally hundreds of kilometres of lake foreshore to explore.
For windsurfers and kitesurfers Paynesville is a great central base for exploring the immediate area and other spots around the Gippsland Lakes.
The town itself has a good selection of food & drinking venues such as pubs, clubs, small restaurants, cafe’s fish n chips & pizza.
Paynesville also has a good variety of accommodation options including camping/holiday parks, motels, holiday homes & apartments including quite a number with waterfront positions and a private jetty.
Paynesville Sailing Spots
There are dozens of good windsurfing & kiting spots in and around Paynesville catering for almost every wind direction.
The water is lightly salted and a bit brackish in colour around Paynesville and doesn’t become clear and more salty until you get past Metung towards Lakes Entrance. The lakes are generally not very deep so the water is quite warm in the warmer months.
The most reliable winds (and best weather) is from October through to March each year however the storm sailing on the lakes can be great all-year-round if you don’t mind the chilly southern winter conditions.

Unfortunately there are no windsurfing or kitesurfing rentals, lessons or retail shops in the area as far as we are aware so you will need to be prepared with your own equipment and spatres.
