The Taranaki Wave Classic is a legendary windsurf event that has been running in Taranaki, New Zealand since the early 80’s. It is held at one of four locations on the coast around the area, which allows the event to take advantage of the 180 degrees and 105 km of coastline, choosing the optimal location on a given day for a given forecast.
The event has legendary status, with waves that have been so big that survival had a huge impact on the winners, one year only 3 sailors made it out past the shore break to the back lineup.
Typically the event runs from Waitara, Weld Rd / Ahu Ahu Rd, Kina Rd South Break, Kina Rd North Break, Pungarehu.
