Wing foiling, Kitesurfing & Windsurfing – Sunshine Coast, Queensland

The Queensland Sunshine Coast runs from Caloundra in the south to Tewantin (near Noosa Heads) in the north situated on the Noosa River. The coastline is some 65 km (40 miles) comprising of spectacular beaches with turquoise blue water, bays and inlets.

It is a very popular area for wind sports all year round due to its warm tropical climate with temperatures rarely dipping below 20 degrees C. Combine this with sea water temperatures of 26 to 28 deg C during summer & 20 to 22 deg C in winter (and even warmer in its coastal lakes), it is very comfortable for sailing. Wetsuits are optional.

The Windy Season

The best time for wind sports such as kitesurfing, wing foiling & windsurfing typically fall during the Aussie spring & summer months (October to March). During this period the region experiences predictable & consistent wind conditions.

The predominant sea breeze is typically SE to S or  N to NE.

The Hot Spots

There are numerous great spots along the Sunshine Coast for all disciplines of wind sports.

Starting from the south, Caloundra is a favourite with its fabulous flat-water kiteing at Golden Beach and wing dinging plus flat water windsurfing at Ayliffe Park wave riding at the surf beaches and down-winders.

Just a little further north near Noosa Heads you will find Lake Cootharaba which is a safe shallow lake for beginners and up and Lake Weyba which works in a S/SE/E and also in a Northerly.

Noosa River Mouth is a great spot for more advanced kiters & wingdingers.

Where To Stay

Caloundra is a great base for accessing all of the spots in the Sunshine Coast with a great variety of hotels, apartments and camping grounds.

A favourite is the Golden Beach Holiday Park which is just a short stroll to Golden Beach and its fabulous kiting, windsurfing & winging spots.

If you like a little luxury, there are plenty of options on Noosa Heads, however if you are a camper you might like the Boreen Point Camping Ground which is right on the Lake Cootharaba.
