- Taranaki: This is one of those spots that is on every experienced windsurfers and kitesurfers list, blessed with consistent winds and challenging waves along the Taranaki coast. Spots like Pungarehu, Waitara and Kina Road offer an unforgettable experience. Not to mention that Taranaki, is home to the legendary Taranaki Wave Classic windsurf event.
- Whanganui River: For beginners and intermediate riders, the sheltered waters of the Whanganui River provide an ideal learning environment. The river’s consistent winds and flat-water conditions allow for rapid skill development.
- Hawke’s Bay: Hawke’s Bay’s diverse mix of gentle waves and flat water attracts windsurfers, kitesurfers, and foilers alike. The region’s consistent winds and varied conditions cater to a wide range of skill levels.
- Auckland: Plenty of estuaries, beaches, peninsulas to offer a safe spot in nearly any wind direction. Lots of people on the water, as it is NZs biggest city. Water quality can be an issue after heavy rain.
- Wellington: also nicknamed windy Wellington. You better bring small gear if you want to enjoy Plimmerton or Lyall Bay (waves), but there are also less hardcore places to sail in Wellington.
South Island: Surf amidst Scenic Splendor
The South Island of New Zealand offers a breathtaking backdrop for windsurfing, wingfoiling, and kitesurfing, with a range of spots suitable for all skill levels.
- Nelson-Tasman: Nelson-Tasman’s reliable although light winds and diverse range of sheltered spots, make it a foiler’s and windsurfer’s paradise. Sheltered bays like Kaiteriteri Beach are perfect for beginners and intermediate sailors. There is an amazing local crowd of of wingers and windsurfers.
- Canterbury: Canterbury’s coastline around Christchurch offers a mix of sheltered bays, exposed beaches, and consistent winds, making it a popular destination for windsurfers, wingfoilers, and kitesurfers. Head out to Lyttleton Harbour, where you are likely to run into a good local crowd of sailors. Further afield, the inland lakes in Canterbury area get super strong winds in a Northwesterly, it’s a pretty good bet that if it’s raining on the West Coast, you probably score there!
- Queenstown: Lake Wakatipu, offers great windsurfing, wingfoiling and kiting, due to it’s consistent thermal wind on summer later afternoons.

- Gear Rental: Windsurfing, wingfoiling, and kitesurfing equipment rental is widely available in the bigger towns around New Zealand, although this is normally gear aimed towards beginner or intermediate wing foilers and windsurfers, the same centres often offer lessons too. For those of you after equipment for more advanced sailors, there are one or two other operators who will rent the latest gear and provide other services such as local delivery and advice of suitability of the gear to the locations you are going to visit on your big Surfari adventure
- Lessons and Schools: Numerous windsurfing, wingfoiling, and kitesurfing schools offer lessons and instruction for beginners and intermediate riders, these are mainly found in the bigger towns.
- Respect the Environment: Be mindful of your surroundings and leave no trace of your presence.
