Matas Bay is located about 2kms north of the centre of Costa Calma, about a five minute drive away, and hence in easy reach from the resort hotels. The bay has a sandy beach about 400m long and is relatively uncrowded.
The wind on this part of the island is very reliable and the windsurf spot here offers some of the cleanest flat water blasting on the whole island.
This is also the most northern beach of the island which receives the thermal wind effect of the hills.
The cross off shore direction, with no obstruction behind, creates glassy flat water and is one for the best blasting / speed sailing spots in Europe. The water state is also unaffected by tides – it is always flat!
The wind in the mornings is light, and coupled with the flat water, makes learning ideal. The stronger winds in the afternoon make the location ideal for intermediates and advanced sailors alike, providing an ideal environment to work on gybing practice without being affected by any chop or waves.
The consistent wind and flat water provide such good speedsailing conditions that Matas Bay has been selected for numerous international and domestic speed sailing and freestyle competitions.
