Windsurfing at Coal Point, Lake Macquarie
Coal point is not really kite boarding friendly due to a lack of rigging & launching space. It is however one of the top spots around Lake Macquarie for windsurfing.
The spot works best in a NE breeze but also works in most other breezes apart from a westerly.
It is ideal for flat-water-blasting and practising gybes on smooth water.
In NE sail across to Sandy Island where the water is protected by sandbars and it can be glassy flat for some fast speed sailing.
In a Northerly, stay up-wind to avoid the rocky outcrop at south end of bay (Skye Point) on return to the launching area.
In a SE sail the south side of the point.
Launch from Coal Point Boat Ramp at Biriban Reserve right at the end of the Peninsula.
There is a grassy rigging area, good parking, kids playground and toilets nearby.
