Collingwood Beach, Jervis Bay (NSW, Australia)
Collingwood Beach is located on Jervis Bay near Huskisson on the NSW South Coast approximately 200km south (3 hours drive) of Sydney.
During summer the prevailing wind comes from the NE making this the perfect spot to launch being cross-on-shore from the left. Like Gerroa, this is one of the windiest places on the NSW South Coast during summer.
The NE breeze is clean with no obstructions to make it gusty. E, SE, S and SSW breezes also work at this spot but the wind is not quite as consistent. Callala Bay to the north in Jervis Bay works better in Southerly conditions.
The wind tends to blow in early in the day during summer and get gustier as the day goes on as the wind tends to go more north so earlier you get out the better. Wind strengths are typically 15 – 30 knots.
The water has a bit of swell and wind chop with flatter water near the point and reef to the north of the bay.
If you happen to get a good swell combined with a NE breeze you will get some great left-handers near the point.
Access & Launching
The most popular spot to rig & launch for both kiters and windsurfers is at the northern end of Collingwood Beach just south of Moona Moona Creek.
You will often find friendly locals here who are more than happy to help you launch.
Windsurfers can also launch to the north side of Moona Moona Creek near the holiday park on the main Huskisson beach.
The sand here is said to be the whitest sand on the planet making the water turquoise blue in colour.
Hazards
This area is well known for sharks during the summer months so just be aware of them however no one has been attacked in this area.
It is not recommended to sail in a westerly off-shore in this area as you could end up a long way out to sea.
Also be aware of the reef to the north.
