Kanahooka Point, Lake Illawara (NSW, Australia)
Kanahooka Point
This spot works best in a NE or moderate SE frontal winds.
This spot is suited to windsurfing, winging and kitesurfing.
The point juts out making it better for clean wind.
Launch from Koonawara Bay Sailing Club where there is some room for rigging & launching kites, windsurfers & wingsurfers.
The water gets relatively deepish quickly so is a favourite spot for locals for foiling and long bump-and-jump runs across the lake.
It is also a nice sheltered location so would be good for beginners.
Be careful wading into the water as there are some sharp rocks and booties are recommended.
Unfortunately this spot is not dog friendly so the pooch will have to stay in the car.
Kitesurfing & Windsurfing Rentals & Lessons
There are no windsurfing rental shops or lessons as far as we are aware apart from some of the sailing clubs on the lake may have some old gear for beginners to learn on.
However if you are wanting to learn kiting or rent some gear there is a place near Primbee in Port Kembler.

1 Review on “Kanahooka Point, Lake Illawara (NSW, Australia)”
I really enjoyed sailing at this spot in Late Nov 2022.
The wind was blowing from the NE at about 12 to 16 knots. I was on a windsurfer foil with 7.5m sail.
The rigging area and launch area was great although you have to be careful entering the water as the concrete edge is very slippery. I wore booties and I found there were some rocks close to shore so I am glad I did.
The water quality was clean even after all of the rain we have had however there were lots of small jelly fish but I didnt get stung by any. And the water was warm like a bath!
The water is plenty deep enough for foiling and I didn’t come across any sandbars.
You can easily sail here by yourself and feel very safe if no one else is around.
