Main Beach Merimbula is one of the most popular spots in Merimbula for both Kiters and Windsurfers.
This spot is where they host the long-running Merimbula Classic wave sailing comp which has been going since 1980.
When the wind blows from the NE, the water is pretty flat and the waves / shore-break relatively small which is ideal for beginner wave riding and freeride/slalom once past the break. However if the wind has too much north in it, it can be quite gusty.
In a SE breeze there is a lot more fetch across the water meaning more consistent wind strength however the swell and chop is far bigger and more ideal for bump-and-jump. Bar Beach is often the choice launching area on a SE breeze as it is protected and doesn’t have a shore break.
Best Time To Visit
The wind is most prominent in the warmer months from October to March. The water temps are usually around 20 – 22 Deg C and air temps from 20 to 30 Deg C on average during summer.
Access & Launching
For windsurfers there is a good car park to the north side of Ford Park with a nice grassy area to rig behind the sand dunes. It is then just a walk over the small dunes to the beach to launch. There can be a bit of a shore break here.
For kitesurfers, park near the Fish Pen and walk over the dunes where you will find plenty of room to rig and launch safely on the large sandy beach.
Hazards
There aren’t really any hazards to speak of at Main Beach apart from the shore break which can sometimes be challenging.
If you sail near the entrance to the Merimbula Lake there can be quite a bit of current so beginners should steer clear of this area.
