Shoalhaven Heads is located approximately 145km (2 hours drive) south of Sydney on the NSW South Coast.
Just inside the river mouth kitesurfers will find some fabulous silky flat water sailing on a sheltered lagoon which works best in a NE breeze. It can also work in a strong S/SE however it will be gusty. As it becomes more west the wind gets blocked by a nearby hill.
This spot only works at high tide otherwise there is very little to no water in the lagoon. The water can be very shallow even at full tide so take particular care when jumping or travelling at speed.
Also be aware that as the NE sea breeze gets up it can get very very blustery and very dangerous so only sail here in moderate conditions.
Access & Launching
There is parking at the end of River Road on the south side of the Shoalhaven Heads Caravan Park…best to walk around to the clearing behind the sand dunes near the beach where you will find adequate area for rigging & launching.
Make sure you keep any spare gear you leave on the beach high enough so it doesn’t get swamped when the tide comes in.
Where To Stay
If you want to hang in the area for a few days, the Holiday Haven Caravan Park has cabins and dog friendly camp sites available located right there on the lagoon.
