Tomakin River Mouth
The Tomakin River Mouth is located at Tomakin on the NSW South Coast approximately 300km (4 hours drive) south of Sydney.
The river mouth provides good flat-water-blasting and small wave riding for wing foilers, windsurfers and kitesurfers in a NE and S (and SE) breeze.
It is one of the few spots on the coast where kitesurfers can safely ride in a S-SE breeze.
The rocks around the river mouth filter out most of the chop however the swell pushes through making it an idea combination of smooth water with waves to jump and ride.
During summer, the prevailing NE winds will generally produce 10 to 25 knots and you can expect 2 – 3 good sessions each week during this period.
The runs are shorter than Broulee (just to the south), but swell is clean whereas Broulee can be choppy.
Access & Launching
There are 2 potential rigging/launch sites here:
- via the beach from Kingston Place where you will find car parking and public toilets. The beach here is also dog friendly which is a bonus for those with dogs. For windsurfers there is a nice grassy area to rig and for kiters there is room on the sandy beach. The launch of the beach can sometimes be a little difficult if the surf is up.
- via Mossy Point boat ramp at Mossy Point on the other side of the river. Launching here often requires a bit of a swim across the river channel as there is a lot of wind shadow here. There is a large car park, a grassy rigging area and sandy beach launch with no shore break. Just be aware of the reef to the right hand side as you head out and the strong currents in the river channel.
Potential Hazards
Be aware of the tide at the mouth of the river which can produce a strong out-going current.
Where To Stay
Tomakin has a couple of caravan parks; Barlings Beach Holiday Park and Ingenio Holidays Tomakin plus a spattering of private holiday homes for rent.
Kitesurfing Services
If you are interested in trying kitesurfing or improving your skills, The Kite Bus runs kitesurfing lessons in and around the Batemans Bay area. They also offer kitesurfer rentals for those needing to rent gear. In addition, if you are looking for someone to ride with, they offer ride days and downwinders for experienced kiters with their own gear.
