Bowen - Queens Beach (QLD, Australia)
Windsurfing, Kitesurfing & Wingfoiling at Queens Beach, Bowen
Bowen (aka blowen bowen) is located 1 hour north of Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday’s in Far North Queensland and is renowned for its constant strong winds all-year-round.
Queens Beach in Bowen is nice long stretch or sandy beach offering great options for foiling whether it be windsurfer foiling, kite foiling or wing foiling.
The best wind directions here are NW, N & NE or even an E can work if you head towards the Don River to the northern end of the beach where you will also get some nice swells to ride.
Typically most of the wind here comes from the SE & ESE so this spot doesn’t work so well for windsurfing as the wind is off-shore.
Access, Rigging & Launching
There are plenty of car parks dotted along Queens Beach with nice grassy rigging areas and shady trees.
You can launch at a number of locations along the bay however there are a number of sections that have a lot of rocks on the beach so best to find a nice sandy spot.
The beach gradient drops off pretty quickly making it an easy place to launch for foiling kites, windsurfers & wingdingers.
Suited To
This spot is suitable to all levels and can be an ideal spot for people learning to foil if the wind is cross or on-shore. Too much south and beginners risk getting blown out to sea. Too much north and the beach can become choppy and difficult for beginners.
For more advanced riders you can get some nice rolling swells further to the northern end of the beach in a SE breeze.
Hazards
The main hazard here is stingers during the warmer months from start November to end May. You can minimise the risk of getting stung by wearing a stinger suit.
Where To Stay
There are a couple of fabulous camping/caravan parks located right on the beach. The Tropical Beach Caravan Park is dog friendly and the beach-front sites are outstanding. The NRMA Beachfront Holiday Park is also fabulous (but not dog friendly).
Services
