Kitesurfing at KFC – Gold Coast, QLD

KFC (Len Fox Park) is located on the Gold Coast Broadwater and is a great spot for flat-water kiting. Windsurfers tend to launch from Mitchell Park Boat Ramp but it is possible to windsurf from here.

The water is generally fairly shallow here with a number of sandbars that raise their head to above or just below the surface at low tide. The sandbars provide a protective barrier to the tidal flow and when the wind and tide come together you can expect some nice flat water to blast in.

The best winds here are N, NE, E, SE. Winds from S don’t work here due to shadows from trees & buildings. Most kiters & windsurfers will head to Shearwater Esplanade in a direct south breeze.

Access, Rigging & Launching

You access this spot via Marine Parade and head to Len Fox Park where you will find a nice grassy area for rigging. Launching for kiters here can be a little tricky here at high tide where there is little beach and may require an assisted launch at the water line.

There are public toilets, a kids playground and BBQs at this spot.

Potential Hazards

For kiters there are trees near the launching area plus some rocks with oyster shells along the shore to the north that can cut your feet.

Sharks are not very common in this area but they can appear. To be safe, avoid sailing at dusk and dawn as this is their prime feeding time.

To the north there are several yachts moored so avoid that area and getting caught up in masts.

The Broadwater can be pretty busy with moving water craft so stay your distance.
