Port Douglas, Far North QLD (Australia)
Port Douglas is located in Far North Queensland approximately 66km (1 hour drive) from Cairns.
Whilst the windsurfing here is not world-class, it is a good spot for some flat-water-blasting and bump-and-jump during the winter months in Australia where you can escape the cold of the southern states.
This is also a popular kitesurfing spot and a local kitesurfing centre called Windswell operates right near the beach offering lessons and kite gear rentals. They also offer a few incredible day trips to nearby islands.
And as luck would have it, the SE trade winds are strongest and most consistent during this time from May to October.
This spot works best in a SE however would also work in an E and N breeze.
Access & Launching
The best spot to launch from is 4 Mile Beach Beach Park where you will find parking and public toilets.
Potential Hazards
If you are in this area during summer / early autumn/ late spring, you will need to wear a wetsuit or stinger suit as the box jelly fish are highly venomous and can be deadly. During winter they are less likely but be on the lookout and still wear a stinger suit to be safe.
Crocs can also be an issue but they tend to spend most of their time near the river mouths; but not always!
Oh and keep an eye out for sharks as well.
