Local’s windsurf & wing foil from here in front of the Keppel Bay Sailing Club which held the 2023 Australian Wing Foil Championships and in 2024 a wing foil dash for cash race.
This spot works in NE/SE (ESE is best and is by far the most prominent wind direction). The most consistent winds here are during the summer months (Nov to April).
The water is brownish in colour due to high amounts of sediment washed out of nearby rivers. The degree of brown versus blue water largely depends on the amount of recent rainfall.
There are no waves to speak of apart from some shore break in onshore breezes but the wind-generated swells can offer some nice bump-and-jump conditions for windsurfers.
When the tide is out, the beach sand is smooth and nard-packed so this is also a great spot for land sailing.
Access, Rigging & Launching
There is car parking behind the sailing club (not sure if it is free??). There is some nice grassy areas for rigging next to the club.
Launching is pretty easy except if you are foiling you may need to wade out some way as the sand gradient is very gradual and the beach can be huge at very low tides.
If you have the non-sailing family with you, the impressive Yeppoon Lagoon swimming pool is right next door.
