Pondalowie Surf Break is at the north end of Pondalowie Bay located on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula in the Dhilba Guuranda – Innes National Park, which is a park that is managed by Parks SA. The park has many coastal bays and beaches and lots to do and see, for instance the Inneston Historic Village, which was once the site of a gypsum mine for the Yorke Peninsula Plaster Company Limited. There is a lot of wildlife to see in the park, emu, goanna, snakes and kangaroos are abundant.

Windsurf, Foiling and Kiting at Pondalowie Surf Break

This spot is primarily a surf break, which when working gives a nice right-hander off the reef.

For windsurfing the location is limited for wave sailing due to the orientation of the wave to the wind, so although you can windsurf, wingfoil or kite here, it will be more of a blasting, free ride spot and bump and jump.

This spot is definitely one for the more adventurous rider who is after a change of scene and variety.

Abilities

The northern end of the Pondalowie bay is more exposed and also has a reef, which gives rise to a nice right-hander, so this spot is suited more to intermediates who are used to launching in waves and advanced capabilities, who are comfortable with reefs and waves. For the more skilled there may be the opportunity for a float and ride session here in the evening or even a bit of on-shore wave action. You need to be comfortable with techniques for carrying your gear to the beach and rigging on the walkway or beach.

Sailing

The bay is suited to all types of windsurfing, foiling, dinging, SUP and kiting. It is especially nice for long blasting runs in the right wind direction, given that it is so long and the scenery is spectacular.

Seasons

You can sail the bay at anytime of the year, the warmer weather is better though and the summer tends to have a slightly higher average breeze.

Water

The north end of the bay, is more exposed than the southern end and home to a reef break, so be aware of the natural hazards associated with reefs/waves. The water itself is crystal clear and the bay is spectacular to sail, regardless of the type of sailing.

Rigging

The beach is fairly flat and the sand is soft, you will have to rig on the beach or on the viewing platform at the end of the boardwalk at this spot, which has plenty of space. From the carpark, there is a short walk of about 300m to the beach, you will need to be competent in carrying your gear in one go.

Launching

At this end of the bay the beach lightly slopes into the bay, so launching is dependent of the surf of the day. Potentially you will have to launch into waves.

Car Parking

There are plenty of car parking spots at this location and toilets with a rain water tank.

Potential Hazards

The reef and waves are the main hazards, at this spot. Which depending on the conditions of the day may or may not be an issue.
