Kitesurfing at The Granites, Coorong, South Australia

The Granites is located along the Princes Highway about 17km west of Kingston SE, you’ll spot the sign as you drive out of or towards Kingston SE. If you are heading from town you may prefer to take take the beach route there. The sand is firm and from town you can access the beach via Long Beach Road and then head west or turn right on the beach! You’ll know when you get to the Granites because there are three large granite rocks on the beach, which are cool for watching the action from.

If you are travelling for a kite session from Adelaide you’ll probably have to allow 3 to 4 hours to get to the Granites.

The Granites is predominately known as a kiting spot, although people do windsurf here too. The waves are normally smaller than Robe. The water can also be shallower.

This spot is primarily a kite spot, although given the right conditions it could be windsurfed too.

Seasons

The winds along the Coorong, in the summer season, tend to be sea breezes, which come in later in the day and can be pretty strong, especially by the early evening. The best time of the year to visit the Granites as a spot for kiting would therefore be in the warmer summer season november through to march. Even in the summer season the southern ocean sea temperatures along the Coorong can be cool, especially if there is a Great Southern Australian Coastal Upwelling System, which causes cooler nutrient rich waters to rise. This in part is why the south-easterly sea breeze can establish so well. We’d recommend you pack at least a spring suit and if you feel the cold a 4/3 wetty. On a recent trip to Robe a few of us ended up in 4/3’s even in february!

Water

The water quality along the Coorong and at the Granites is great, although it can be cold even in the summer, see the Season section for details. The waves here in the main season, do not get heavy, so they can be good for a bit of onshore riding and also ramps for jumping, when the wind is slightly more sideshore.

Rigging

The rigging here is on the beach, you could rig in the carpark, but we would recommend that you take either your vehicle and gear on to the beach or just take your gear down onto the firm sand.

Launching

Launching a kite here should be easy as long as you stay away from others and you are familiar with solo launch and landing techniques. Failing that take a friend or partner. The beach at the Granites is wide open and firm with few obstacles. The entry into the water is via a slightly shelving beach and there are small waves, the area is protected by an outer reef, so the waves tend to be small although in the winter and on other occasions they can get larger.

Car Parking

There is a large carpark, with room for around 50 cars, but it is easiest to drive down to the beach and park exactly where you want to kite or windsurf. If you are driving on the beach in a car, it is easier to exit the beach at the Kingston end before the creek “Blackford Drain”, there is an easy entry/exit at the end of Long Beach Road.

Potential Hazards

In South Australia, cars and vehicles are allowed to drive on some beaches. The beach between the Granites and Kingston SE is firm and gently slopes, so it is common to see cars on the beach driving to the ideal spot or just touring. In particular this beach is known to have the occasional light aircraft land on the beach, so keep your eyes open! If you are driving on the beach in a 2wd car, it is easier to exit the beach at the Kingston end before the creek “Blackford Drain”, there is an easy entry/exit at the end of Long Beach Road.
