Pigs bay is downwind to the right and a continuation of South Bay. As the beach extends south, the shoreline turns from sand to rocks. For a few hundred metres these rocks are flat and slippery, and if windsurfers find themselves in this area they can damage their boards and fins, so it’s best for less experienced sailors to stay upwind of Pigs Bay and remain in the sandy area of the windsurfing launch spot in South Bay. The other disadvantage of Pigs bay is that the mountain of Montaña Roja further downwind to the south creates a vacuum and therefore an unreliable wind at sea level. Pigs Bay is however a popular zone for kite surfers as it is close to where they launch from and there are some decent waves there.
Hotel Playa Sur is located on the beach at El Medano. Rooms are simple (accommodating single/twin/doubles) with pine furniture and all have a balcony with sea view. Facilities include an outdoor pool with sun terrace, bike & surfboard storage and a sauna (costs extra). There is a restaurant & poolside
