Abilities

This spot if fine for all abilities as the prevailing wind from the southerly direction tends to ensure you always safely end up back on the beach. The only issue to watch is the chop. If you are a complete beginner sail before the wind gets strong and the chop picks up in the late afternoon.

Sailing

The spot is a well known location for both slalom blasting and also bump and jump sailing, the spot gets some nice waves in a decent southerly, which is great for perfecting forward loops and jumping. The local crowd are very friendly, and in recent years both this location and Elwood have become the main wingding spots on this side of the bay.

Seasons

Many sail all year round, the spring and summer months are best so from September through to daylight savings change in April. In the winter, there is no reliable sea breeze, so sail on forecast. The water in the Port Philip Bay in the winter drops to around 9 or 10 degrees, so be prepared. In the summer, we often sail in shorts only.

Rigging

There is a fantastic area to rig on the grass at the end of Dawson Avenue.

Launching

The lauch area is a soft sand beach, which gently slopes, there is a clearly visible rock area at one end and a pier/water outlet at the other. These do not impact launch and there is plenty of room.

Car Parking

You can park on Dawson Avenue, just be aware of any signage. You can also park on adjacent streets. If you struggle for parking here, it is very easy to park at Elwood beach or the carpark near Elwood Sailing Club and then sail up to Dawsons and back.
