Mallacoota River Mouth (Victoria, Australia)
Mallacoota is located in far Eastern Victoria.
The river mouth is suited to kite boarders looking for flat water sailing in shallow water with a sandy bottom. It is a great spot to kite amongst the sandbars and you can camp nearby the sailing area.
The ideal wind direction is SE to E (SE being the cleanest wind). NE & NW can also work if you are near the heads due to the large fetch across the water from the land. If there is too much south in it, it will be gusty from the protrusion of the headland.
Launch at the boat ramp and ride the river mouth, the ocean beaches and the flat water of bottom lake in amongst the sand bars.
Another option is to hire a boat with a mate or two to get to some of the islands and sandbars in the lake and launch from there, depending on wind direction but especially in southerlies where there are some awesome spots across the lake. The sandbar near the entrance would be a good place to launch.
Mallacoota is far more than just a great windsurfing / kitesurfing spot. When the wind isn’t blowing there is great fishing in the lake for flathead or bream. Surfing, lake & sea kayaking, SUPping, mountain biking, snorkelling, scuba diving, relaxing walks along the beach and around town, boat cruises to Gabo Island to visit the seals & penguins, river & lake cruises are just a few of the other things to do at Mallacoota.
