Marlay Point (Victoria, Australia)
Windsurfing & Kitesurfing at Marlay Point
Marlay Point is located at the western-end of the Gippsland Lakes system, 18km or 15 mins drive from Sale or 230 kms (approx 2:45 mins drive) east of Melbourne.
It offers flat water sailing for kitesurfing & windsurfing in an E, NE, S and SE breeze.
In summer, afternoon sea breezes of 15 – 20 knots are common.
The water is fresh water (although generally quite muddy in colour) and it is shallow for a long way out making it a great place for beginners learning to kitesurf or windsurf.
The bottom is muddy but generally clean of debris.
Access & Launching
Drive down Marlay Point Road to the end where it meets the water at the Lake Wellington Yacht Club.
Here you will find plenty of room to rig and launch.
There is plenty of parking, picnic tables, a jetty, boat ramp and fish cleaning facilities.
There is a FREE camp site right on the water’s edge plus a public toilet block but no showers, electricity or drinking water. There is mobile telephone reception at this location (Netflix works well!). There is an electric BBQ & shelter available and the camping/foreshore area is pet friendly.
The camp area is sheltered by big cypress trees keeping it cool during summer and providing some shelter from the wind.
Be cautious of snakes around the area, particularly if you have a dog with you.
Other Things To Do
Swim, walk along the beach or through the reserves, fish, watch the pelicans feast, kayak, sail, boating, jet ski, water ski, bird watching or just relax and enjoy the tranquility.
The fishing here for European Carp in fresh water can provide a lot of fun for kids simply using corn or bread on a hook.

I actually didn’t get to sail here due to the wind being a little light (approx 12 knots) however I believe it would provide some good bump-and-jump conditions on small chop when the wind is up.
I must admit, the water colour was a bit of a put-off although it isn’t really polluted, it is just that it is where the La Trobe River and Avon River enter the lake bring silt down-stream. It can however get a bit of blue-green-algae when there hasn’t been much rain for some time (usually at the end of summer).
The campsite is very basic but you can’t get much closer to the water than this!
If you are looking for a free place to stay by the water this is a good spot but you have to bring everything with you including drinking water.
I gave it just 2 out of 5 but remember these ratings are against the best spots in the world.
