Metung is a small village located on the Gippsland Lakes in Eastern Victoria.
Metung is one of the windiest places on the southern mainland of Australia and when the wind blows from a southerly direction (SE best – cross-shore or S cross-on-shore), windsurfing can be pretty good on the western-side of the Metung Peninsula.
The water can be reasonably flat towards the south and becomes more bumpy the further north you head as it is reasonably shallow and has a greater fetch. It is ideally suited to slalom and bump-and-jump. It is also a good safe beginners area in the lighter breezes with little to no current in this bay area.
You don’t see many windsurfers here these days, just the odd kiter however this is a place well worth a visit if you are looking for a spot to sail on the Gippsland Lakes.
You can launch anywhere along beach road however some spots are more sandy than others. Near the jetty on Kerna Ave is one of the best spots where there are picnic tables and BBQ facilities as well.
There are car parks dotted along the side of the road and the odd patch of grass to rig on.
This stretch of beach allows dogs on leads but when no one is around it seems all dogs are free to roam.
