Raymond Island Gravelly Point (Victoria, Australia)
Windsurfing at Gravelly Point on Raymond Island
Gravelly Point is on the south-western side of Raymond Island on the Gippsland Lakes near Paynesville.
The spot work well for windsurfing in a NE and SW breeze (or pretty much all directions in between e.g. S, SE & E. 20-30 knots south westerlies and easterlies are quite common in Summer which usually kick in around 2pm each afternoon!
The water is ideal for bump-and-jump and flat water sailing depending on wind direction & strength.
Raymond Island has 360 degrees of water frontage so there are plenty of places to explore around the island.
Access & Launching
Raymond Island is located approximately 300km (3.5 hours drive from Melbourne). Access to the island is via a ferry service in Paynesville.
Gravelly Point is accessed via Gravelly Point Road. The point is about 6km from the ferry terminal on Raymond Island.
There is a sandy beach area for rigging and launching.
Carstairs Bank can be interesting- this is where the chop breaks over some shallow banks in the middle of the lake.
Otherwise the approach to the Straits up near Fort King Road is good on a Easterly.
