Ricketts Point South Wing Foiling, Kite and Windsurfing

Located at the south end of the carpark at Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, in front of the Beaumaris Life Saving Club on the south-east side of Port Phillip Bay near Melbourne, Victoria.

Best Wind/Season

This spot pumps in a westerly, where the water is protected by the reef keeping the water relatively flat on the inside of the reef, but with the possibility of hitting the waves breaking on the reef making it good for not only flat water sailing, but also for jumping and messing around in the cross-onshore waves.

Ricketts point also works in an easterly and south-easterly breeze where the water can get quite rough producing some good chop and waves for bump and jump. In these conditions, it is sometimes easier to rig up on the road (Near Dalgetty Road) and carry gear down the stairs at the E end of the beach in a south-easterly.

Potential Hazards

The Reef here runs out on the Northern end of the beach then hooks around and runs across the beach a few hundred meters offshore.

It is pretty safe at high tide unless you venture too far north. A good rule is not sail further north than the no boating mark in front of the life saving club.

At low tide you have to be a more careful of the section of offshore reef that hooks around. It is pretty visible so just steer-clear of the breaking waves.

Access, Rigging & Launching

Access to Ricketts Point South is via the car park just after Ricketts Point Beachside Café, when heading south, to get to the rigging area, turn left and keep driving through the car park to the south end near the Beaumaris Life Saving Club. The car park is gravel, you will know when you get there and, don’t forget to pay, either at the pay stations or using the EasyPark app.

One you are at the Gravel carpark, there are plenty of spots to rig-up, there is an area of grass adjacent to the Life Sailing Club, which is plenty big enough for several sailors to a wing, windsurf sail or kite. Even if this area is busy, there is grass near the front of the club too.

In a south-easterly or easterly you may want to park and rig-up near Dalgetty Road, then use the stairs to get your gear down, so that you do not have to struggle against the wind and weather.

Facilities

At the other end of the carpark there is a Ricketts Point Beachside Café, which does food and drinks. There are also public toilets in the carpark.
