Sperm Whale Head, Gippsland Lakes (Victoria, Australia)
Sperm Whale Head is located in the Lakes National Park on the Gippsland Lakes approximately 270 km east of Melbourne.
Most people who visit this spot would do so via boat. From Paynesville it is about 6km by boat.
There is however a 4wd track that takes you via the national park all the way to the point (Point Wilson) which is about 18km from Loch Sport.
This spot offers windsurfers and kitesurfers some super flat water sailing due to a sand bar extending out from the point which protects the water. Further out you will get some classic Gippsland Lakes bump-and-jump action.
E to NE would work best here however you could get some good sailing from N & W winds as well. Pretty much any direction apart from direct S.
The spot has a boat jetty for those who visit by boat and a free car park for those that visit by vehicle.
The launching area is a sandy beach which is large enough for kites to rig.
As this is a national park, no pets are allowed.
Where To Stay
If you have access to a boat, Paynesville is the most likely base. If you are travelling by road, Loch Sport (18km away) is the closest town with facilities however there is a small bush camping ground (Emu Bight Camping Ground) located about 10kms back towards Loch Sport.
If you are lucky enough to have a large enough boat to sleep on, you can tie up to the jetty overnight or anchor to the shore.
Other Things To Do
This area has incredible wildlife and some lovely walking tracks. Kayaking and fishing are also popular activities in the area.
