WIND:The best winds for this spot are from the North West which is cross-shore to the South which is cross-onshore. There are quite a few boats moored in the harbour and the break wall can also create a small amount of turbulence if you sail further out in the harbour. Once out of the harbour, the wind is a lot cleaner.
SAILING:The sailing in the sheltered harbour is ideal for flat water blasting and freestyle jumping for kite surfers. Outside of the harbour you will find quite a bit of chop. Foiling at this spot is also highly popular.
ABILITIES:This spot is ideal for all levels and there is a couple of Kite Schools located at the spot plus a retailer of windsurfing & kitesurfing gear.
SEASON:The season predominantly runs from October through to March where there is a relatively reliable thermal sea breeze that kicks in each afternoon from a southerly direction.
WATER:The water is generally pretty clean apart from after a heavy rainfall where a lot of storm water spills into the bay making the water brownish. Inside the harbour is generally pretty flat and outside of the harbour the chop can reach over 1 metre.
RIGGING:There is a very large sandy beach here making it ideal for rigging kites. But be aware that this beach is sometimes quite busy with beach goers so be sure to know what you are doing when rigging around lots of people.
LAUNCHING:The launch area is from a sand beech with none to a small shore break.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS:The main hazard here is sand bars and at times a few jelly fish (that aren't deadly but can give you a little sting and they are pretty solid if you hit one at speed on a foil).
This spot is just a few kms from the city so there are heaps of Air BnB properties, hotels & motels near-by. St Kilda is one of Melbourne's most vibrant nightlife venues so there is a huge array of restaurants, cafes and bars. There is also BBQ facilities, picnic tables and a kids playground near-by and the harbour beach is an off-lead dog beach.
