Back Beach Lancelin (WA, Australia)

Lancelin Back Beach is just opposite Edward Island located in Lancelin approximately 1.5 – 2 hours drive from Perth.

This spot is popular for windsurfers and kiteboarders wanting to sail flat water on turquois-blue water when the swell is low.

As there is no outer reef at this spot, is is also popular with surfers due to its shore-break.

This is an ideal place to head if the lagoon is crowded as there is plenty of room to move.

When there is swell there can be a good wave about 400m off-shore for left & right turns.

The wind is generally cross-on-shore from the left side.

Best Time To Visit

The winds are strongest from late December to January (typically 20 – 25 knots) however Nov, Feb and March can also be good. Typically you will get wind 6 out of 7 days during the peak period.

Launching

Access & Launching

You can access this spot by either driving along the beach from Lancelin or alternatively drive south of town along fisher way and park at the parking area at the end of the road and walk your gear down to the beach. If you have a 4wd you can drive right on to the beach and find your own private piece of paradise. Kitesurfers should pay particular attention to current rigging restrictions in this area.

There is no reef in this area, just a nice sandy bottom. If kiters access from the Edwards Island point there is quite a bit of weed (which can be smelly) and be aware that the island can create a significant wind shadow. Be aware of Blue Bottle Jelly Fish that frequent the are during summer. They can give off a bit of a sting but are not deadly. Sharks and not generally an issue here however you may see a few dolphins and seals.
