For those that love flat-water-blasting, the Lancelin Lagoon located in Lancelin is ideal for both windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Expect screaming runs up-and-down the lagoon with the opportunity to hit a wave at either end of the lagoon.

Crystal-clear, turquoise blue water which is ideal for beginners and freeride / slalom sailors. Due to the shallow waters and the reef, foiling is not recommended.

The shallow water also makes it the perfect for the kiteboarding lessons or a freestyle practice session.

The closer you get to Edward Island the flatter the water becomes.

Best Time

The winds are strongest from late December to January (typically 20 – 25 knots) however Nov, Feb and March can also be good. Typically you will get wind 6 out of 7 days during the peak period.

Access & Launching

For windsurfers, there is a nice grassy rigging area located in front of the Lancelin Caravan Park at the end of Hopkins street. Here you will also find a public BBQ, shelter area and toilets.

For beginner windsurfers, launch at North Point, opposite Lancelin island where you will find clear water with no cray boats.

For kites, you must not use the windsurfing area or swimming area. Kites launch from Edward Island Point which has a nice big sandy beach to rig and launch from. If you have a 4WD you can drive right on to the beach otherwise it is just a short walk from the car park.

Hazards

Watch out for the reef though as it could stick out the water when the tides are low and water shallow.

Also be aware of blue bottle jelly fish that appear at some points during summer that can give off a bit of a sting but are not deadly.

Sharks are not generally a problem in this area.
