Big Bay is a small bay surrounded by rocks and one of the hotspots of Blouberg for watersports enthusiasts of any level. It is a great spot for both Kiters and Windsurfers. More recently the spot has become popular with Wing Foilers too.

It’s a great clean wave spot for kiters in Westerly wind, with long clear sections in-between waves and a safe spot for practice in any other wind direction with flat water. For windsurfers the wave conditions are a likely going to be cross-onshore.

Abilities

The spot conditions vary with wind direction, so is able to cater for many abilities of kiter, windsurfer or foiler

Sailing

Great kite wave spot (if the wind direction is Westerly) with long clean waves that don’t have too much push to them or flat clear surface (in any wind direction except for Westerly).

Seasons

The best time of year to sail here is in the warmer months between October to march, where it is pretty windy most days. In Big Bay’s high season the wind is over 25 knots 95% of the time.

Rigging

Rigging on the beach or in the grass next to the parking, kiters will need to be aware that being a bay the beach can get crowded at times.

Launching

The beach tends to be short for setting up, and there’s quite a bit of kelp at times, but manageable. Keep downwind from the rocks.

Car Parking

Lots of free parking 1 min away. It can get crowded, especially during summer months. If the parking here is full also try parking near the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club or Klein Baai Beach Parking Lot, not perfect but you’ll still get a session. Grab an ice cream at Klein Baai Parking lot after you session!

Potential Hazards

The most obvious hazard are the rocks, but be aware that the beach can be a bit weedy too.
