Getting to Karpathos

Karpathos is well-connected for water sports travellers, offering both air and sea options to suit different preferences.
  • By Air: The most direct way is flying into Karpathos Island National Airport (AOK). You can catch a domestic flight from Athens, which takes about an hour, or during the peak season, take a seasonal or charter flight from various European cities. The best part? The airport is just 4-5 kilometres from the main water sports hubs in Afiartis and Agrilaopotamos, so you can be on the water with minimal delay after you land.
  • By Sea: If you’re bringing a lot of your own gear or just prefer a more scenic journey, year-round ferries connect Karpathos to Piraeus (Athens’ main port). The island also has extensive ferry links to other islands like Rhodes, Crete, and Kasos, making it a great base for an island-hopping adventure.
Once you’re on the island, getting around is a breeze. Taxis from the airport to Afiartis are quick and affordable, taking just 12-14 minutes and costing around €14. For maximum flexibility, especially if you want to explore beyond the beaches, hiring a car or a scooter is highly recommended.

Where to Stay in Karpathos

Choosing the right accommodation in Karpathos is all about location, location, location. Staying in or near the Afiartis region is the best bet, as it puts you right next to all the action.
  • Afiartis II: A ‘hidden gem’ for windsurfing enthusiasts, this accommodation offers a cosy, community vibe with individual houses right on the surf spot. It’s a fantastic choice if you want to roll out of bed and onto the water, and you’ll find a small supermarket and five great restaurants nearby.
  • Sofia Studios: Situated between Gun Bay and Chicken Bay, Sofia Studios offers self-catering accommodation just a 5-minute walk from the windsurfing centres and restaurants. They have an outdoor pool and a whirlpool to help you unwind after a massive day on the water.
  • Other Options: Hotels like the Poseidon Blue Gastronomy Hotel and Arkasa Palace are a bit further afield, but still great options if you have a rental car and want to explore more of the island.

Karpathos's - Food & Nightlife

Karpathos’s culinary scene is a journey in itself, offering authentic Greek island food with a local twist. The island’s gastronomy is built on a farm-to-table ethos, with tavernas serving fresh seafood, local meats, and veggies grown in nearby gardens.
  • Must-Try Dishes: Don’t leave without trying makarounes, a handmade pasta with caramelised onions and local cheese. The island is also famous for its slow-cooked lamb, freshly grilled octopus, and a variety of unique cheeses.
  • Local Experience: Beyond the restaurants, you can immerse yourself in the food culture with a wine-tasting tour at Mattsson Winery or a honey-tasting experience to sample the famous thyme honey. Some traditional villages even offer cooking classes where you can learn to make dishes like makarounes from scratch.
  • Nightlife: While not a party destination, the main town of Pigadia offers a great vibe with numerous restaurants and bars. Afiartis is also a great place to socialise, especially at places like the Meltemi Bar or Club Anemos, where you can grab a drink and swap stories with other riders.

Activities Around Karpathos

Even on the rare ‘no-wind’ day, Karpathos has plenty to keep you busy. The island offers a holistic holiday experience that extends far beyond the beach.
  • Hiking: With over 50 marked hiking trails, Karpathos is a trekker’s paradise. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for hiking, when the temperatures are mild and the hills are green. You can find trails for all levels, from a moderate walk to ancient ruins to a challenging hike to the island’s highest peak, Mount Kali Limni.
  • Cultural Immersion: Explore the traditional villages, especially Olympos, which is like a “living folklore museum” where locals still wear traditional clothing and speak ancient dialects.
  • Other Activities: You can also try scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters, go mountain biking on rugged trails, or take a guided quad tour to explore the island. On a windless day, grabbing a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak is a great way to still get out on the water.

Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Go: For the most consistent wind, aim for June to September. July and August are the windiest months, but also the busiest. If you’re a beginner, May and October offer slightly more moderate conditions that are great for learning.
  • Booking: Book your flights, accommodation, and equipment rental well in advance, especially if you’re travelling in August. Pre-booking can often get you a better price and guarantee availability.
  • Packing: Pack a Lycra rash guard for sun protection in summer and a wetsuit for sessions in spring or autumn. Water shoes or booties are a must to protect your feet from small stones and rocks on the beaches.
  • Insurance: Always review your travel insurance policy to make sure it covers water sports activities. Also, be aware that damage insurance for rental gear is usually an extra local charge, typically around €45 per week.
