Boracay (Philippines)

Getting to Boracay

Accessing Boracay Island involves a multi-modal journey, typically beginning with a flight to one of two primary airports, followed by land and sea transfers.
  • Caticlan (MPH) / Godofredo P. Ramos Airport: This is the closest and most convenient gateway. From Caticlan Airport, it’s a short 10-15 minute tricycle ride to Caticlan Jetty Port, then a quick 10-15 minute boat transfer directly to Boracay Island. This option significantly reduces overall travel time, maximising your beach time. Ideal for convenience, especially with bulky gear.
  • Kalibo (KLO) International Airport: Although it often serves more international and budget-friendly flights, Kalibo requires a considerably longer land transfer. From Kalibo, you’ll take a van or bus for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to Caticlan Jetty Port before boarding a boat to Boracay. Potentially more economical for flights, but prepare for a longer journey.

Transfer Process & Tips:

  • Jetty Port Procedures: At Caticlan Jetty Port, you’ll need to register with the Department of Tourism and pay mandatory terminal and environmental fees. Have Philippine Peso cash ready.
  • Boat Transfers: A 15-20 minute boat ride takes you to Cagban Jetty Port on Boracay. Boats typically operate from 5 AM to 9 PM, so plan your flight arrival accordingly.
  • On-Island Transport: From Cagban Jetty Port, tricycles or vans will take you to your accommodation.
  • Pre-booking: To avoid long lines and confusion, it’s highly recommended to pre-book airport transfers that include both land and boat components. Providers like Southwest Tours are often recommended.
  • Sport Equipment: If travelling with a kite bag or other bulky sports equipment, always check the airline’s policies. Cebu Pacific, for example, allows pre-booking sports equipment.
Minimising arrival friction is key for enthusiasts eager to get on the water, and pre-booking transfers significantly streamlines this logistical chain.

Where to Stay in Boracay

Boracay offers a wide range of accommodation options that cater to the specific needs and preferences of water sports enthusiasts, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly guesthouses.
  • Water Sports Friendly: Establishments like Hangin Kite Resort, Habagat Kiteboarding Boracay, and Kite Camp Boracay (Ocean Adventure Surf) are ideally located directly on or very near Bulabog Lagoon. They often provide equipment storage, direct beach access, and integrated lessons and rentals, minimising travel time and logistical complexities with gear.
  • Luxury Options: For a higher-end experience, Shangri-La Boracay offers a 5-star seaside sanctuary with direct access to secluded beaches and a wide variety of water sports activities, including kitesurfing, directly from the resort.
  • Budget-Friendly: Numerous affordable options are available, many of which are conveniently located near water sports areas. Examples include Happiness Hostel Boracay and White Shamrock Beach Hotel. Bulabog Beach itself is a popular spot for cheap hotels, especially for water sports enthusiasts.
This diverse range ensures you can find lodging that aligns with your budget and preferences, from solo adventurers to families seeking a luxurious and activity-rich vacation.
