Elliot Heads Main Beach Windsurfing, Kitesurfing & Wing Foiling

The Main Beach in front of the Elliot Heads caravan park offers fabulous blue water suited to all wind sports disciplines.

This spot has excellent flat water for blasting around and bump and jump in some nice swell and small waves, ideal for the novice wave rider.

Best Wind/Season

This spot works in winds from N to E to W although a direct E is on-shore and may present some difficulties getting out. You can however walk further up the beach to the south where the entrance spit bends to the east to get more of a cross-shore breeze in an Easterly.

During winter, the high pressure systems move to the north higher up the coast so Far North QLD is the go during winter.

During spring (Sept to Dec) the area is blessed with regular N – NE breezes. The wind softens during the hotter wet season and reignites in Autumn (March to June) when the SE trade winds hit.

However you can really sail here all year round.

Access, Rigging & Launching

There is a nice free sealed car parking area adjacent to the beach with a grassy rigging area. Then its about a 100m walk along the rocky groin to the beach to the left hand-side where it is safest to launch.

The land and the rock wall cause a bit of a wind shadow depending on the wind direction for about 100 metres. Once you get past this area you will have nothing but clear air with winds from N, E to S.

Potential Hazards

There are a few rock hazards to the N & S but they can be easily seen and easily avoided. Minimal shore break but can become more substantial in a strong breeze.

Where To Stay

There is a caravan park located right at the main beach meaning you can just carry your gear directly from your campsite. Unfortunately the park is NOT PET FRIENDLY so for those with a fury travel partner you will need to stay elsewhere.

A dog friendly option is about 15 mins drive away at the Absolute Oceanfront Tourist Park at Bargara.
