Meningie (South Australia)
Meningie is located on the shores of Lake Albert fed by the mighty Murray River in South Australia approximately 150 kms (1:45 hours drive) SE of Adelaide.
The water is fresh water and opaque in colour with an average depth of around 1.7 metres and there is no weed. It can be a bit choppy but one of the great things about this spot is you can camp right on the lake at the Meningie Caravan Park. Sites 1 – 11 are powered sites right on the water and you can leave your gear rigged over night and chase the best wind conditions throughout the day. There are also some lovely non-powered sites located right on the lake as well.
The water is deep enough for foiling so windsurfer foiling & wing dinging is great at this spot. Just be aware you need to walk out about 50m to get to the deep water.
This spot from the caravan park should work in W, NW, N, NE & E. South may beblustery as it is off-shore however there are other launch spots around the lake that should work for Southerlies.
You can easily stroll into town (about 1km) to get a feed at the local pub or pick up some takeaway. There is also a great cafe right next door to the caravan park serving great coffee and a lovely breakfast & lunch menu.
Access & Launching
You can launch directly in front of the camping site however there are lots of spots around the lake where launching would be possible including the Meningie yacht club. Just be aware there a few sharp stones along the shoreline to stop erosion but they only protrude about half a metre so booties aren’t necessarily required.
The bottom is silt mud but pretty firm.
The lake can get pretty choppy and the wind can get very strong so be aware of this in line with your ability.
I also encountered a couple of rocks about 50m from the shore which I struck with the foil. Thank goodness I was only walking gthe board at gthe time so no damage done but of you were to hit these at speed it would do some serious damage.

I really loved sailing here due to the convenince of the Caravan park to the lake. The water got a bit lumpy as the wind came up but wasn’t too crazy.
Foiling was also great at this location but be aware of a few rocks about 50m metres out from the shoreline.
This would also be a great spot for a family winsurfingvacation and perfect for beginners.
