Windsurfing in Anse Le Raie

Anse La Raie Windsurfing

The windsurfing launch area is in front of the ION Club windsurfing centre, located at the grounds of the Sensimar Lagoon hotel. The water in front of the windsurfing centre is deep enough to launch at all tidal states, and the bottom is sandy. In the mornings when the winds are lighter, beginners can be taken around to the bay of Anse La Raie, where there is a 300m wide shallow mostly sandy lagoon, which is very protected, and the water very flat. This is also an ideal location to take out kids windsurfing. As the wind rises from late morning, the area in front of the wiindsurf centre becomes the perfect launching spot for intermediate and advanced windsurfers to launch and blast in and out in cross shore conditions, The area in front of the launch spot is also ideal fro freestyle. There is a surface chop that develops on the water, but remains fairly flat. There is no shorebreak. This location is also ideal for fast slalom boards and race equipment, due to the big open expanse of uncrowded lagoon, which extends out to 2.5km from the launch spot. You can also sail upwind for many kilometres in a south easterly direction, before returning downwind on long speed runs.

Best Suited To

Anse La Raie is suited to all levels from beginners to advanced, depending on the wind strengths, However, for wavesailing, the break is 2.5kms from the launch area, and although good wavesailing can be had on the reef, better options can be found at the south of the island in Le Morne.

Best Gear to Use

Freeride and freestyle from 85 to 120 litres, and rigs up to 6.5m Slalom race equipment. For all board and rig sizes.

Kitesurfing in Anse Le Raie

Anse La Raie Kitesurfing

The kitesurfing launch area is located in the 300m wide sandy bay shallow lagoon of Anse La Raia. There is an ION Club kitesurf centre located there which provides tuition as well as rental of equipment. The bay is mostly sandy and knee deep, with a cross-onshore wind from the right, making it very safe, and the water very flat. The wind averages between force 3 and 6 beaufort (12 to 25 knots). The bay is about a 5 minute walk from the Sensimar Lagoon Hotel and from the Paradise Cove Hotel. Beginners can have lessons in the shallow lagoon at the centre. Teaching takes place from the beach, as well as from the support boat in the lagoon. The ION Club centre also provides staff who can help those hiring equipment to launch their kites. Outside of the small 300m wide lagoon is the main lagoon, which extends 2.5km to the outer reef for more experienced kiters. The water has a small chop but no swell. The lagoon stretches 20km towards the South East. To take advantage of the huge area, the centre also organizes downwinders with a support boat for those wanting to cruise long distances in the 20km long lagoon. At the outer reef there are small waves between 0.5 to 2 meters high which are smaller than those in the south of the island. The centre provides excursions to the outer reef with a support boat and supervision. For those that are customers of the ION club there is also a rescue service
