Wallis Lake, Central Coast NSW Australia
Nice shady trees to park under at sailing club
The lake is shallow for about 50m in front of sailing club
Public toilets at sailing club
Sailing club only open periodically
Runs of up to 5km possible
4 most common launch spots
Wallis Lake is located just 10 mins drive south of Forster on the NSW Central Coast.
This spot offers amazing flat water sailing in a NE breeze, particularly at the northern end where the water is protected by surface weed. GPS speed events are often held at this spot and the runs are several kilometres long.
In fact the lake works pretty well in most breezes apart from a easterly.
The lake is mostly shallow so only has small chop out towards the centre of the lake. The water is nice an clean and due to a mostly sandy bottom it is a lovely blue colour when the sun is shining.
A weed fin is handy to get onto the small weed banks, but shouldn’t be required for the majority of the lake.
If you are staying at the Holiday Park it is just 10 mins drive south to another ripper flat water spot at Smiths Lake.
Access/Launching
1. Great Lakes Sailing Club
The sailing club has deeper water from the shore so it is one of the best places to launch at for Wallis Lake. There is lots of grass to rig on and there is public toilets and showers at the club (if it is open). If launching from the sailing club in a NEer you can sail up towards Green Pt for several kilometres. If you need a breather just hop off, its usually around chest deep and the bottom is muddy/weedy but OK.
The big sand bar downwind at the sailing club is also reassuring for anyone learning as you can just drift to it and walk back.
Dogs are not permitted here.
2. Tioni Holiday Park
If you are staying at the Tioni Holiday Park it is possible to launch directly from the park however the water is shallow for a few hundred metres and combined with weed it isn’t the best spot.Make sure you request a cabin on the lake side of the road so you can leave your board rigged next to your cabin without having to drag it across the road.
The park is dog friendly so you can have your pooch here as long as they are on a lead.
The surf beach here is also fabulous with crystal clear water and safe swimming conditions.
3. Booti Point
As Booti Point is within the National Park there is a daily entry fee for vehicles. Access the point from the Lakes Way and it’s a bit of a track down to the spot.Needless to say, pets are not welcome here.

Tiona Holiday Park is located on the thin strip of land between Wallis Lake and 7 Mile Beach on the NSW Central Coast. You can launch directly from the front of the park however it is quite shallow for a few hundred metres; combined with a bit of weed and it is not ideal. A better spot is just south Read more...

1 Review on “Wallis Lake, Central Coast NSW Australia”
I sailed from the sailing club in late November 2022 in a stiff 18 to 22 knot westerly.
The water was brown but clean and warm and the chop was moderate.
The rigging area was lovely with huge palm trees surrounding the area and lots of grass.
The launching area was on a nice sandy beach and the sand extended out abot 50m before hitting the weed where the bottom turned in to sift mud. I didnt wear booties and at no stage did I step on anything sharp.
Even though this wasn’t the ideal NE breeze, it was still a lot of fun sailing here in the blustery westerly.
PS no dogs are permitted here which is a real issue with many great sailing spots in NSW if you have a dog.
