Windsurfing & Kitesurfing at Coodanup, Mandurah
Coodanup (aka Fangy’s Weed Farm or just Fangy’s) is a well known spot for flat water blasting and speed sailing on Collins Pool in Mandurah with many 40+ knot speeds.
Works in NW to S breeze.
Short weed fins are mandatory here, ideally a delta fin.
The area immediately in front of the Coodanup foreshore is shallow but relatively smooth as the outer bank cuts out most of the chop on moderate tides. The wind often appears to be 1-2 knots stronger in a sea breeze as it funnels along the shore.
Generally use this area for high speed gybes and then charge back down over the flats toward the eastern end. The higher the tide the lesser the effect of the outer bank in smoothing the water. This area can get very smooth even on a sea breeze as the extended shallows to the SW takes out most of the chop.
Access, Rigging & Launching
The best place to launch is the area in front of the Coodanup foreshore. Here you will find a nice grassy area to rig.
Note: don’t use the main car park to rig and launch as it is very shallow and is full of rocks and shells.
Potential Hazards
Apart from the obvious weed banks and potential stikes in shallow water on the bottom, there are crabs that nip and cobbler fish that can give you a nasty sting if you stand on one. There are also lots of stingrays in the area so be wary of these not to stand on one.
There have been a few shark sightings but more commonly there are curious dolphins around.
