Green Island, Cairns (QLD, Australia)
Green Island is located in the Coral Sea on the Great Barrier Reef and is only accessible by boat or helicopter from Cairns.
Here you will find some of the best windsurfing in Australia for those that love slalom or flat water high speed sailing. At low tide the reef acts as a barrier keeping the chop to a minimum even when it’s blowing 20+ knots. The water is warm and crystal clear.
The last couple of years the Australian National Slalom Championships have had event here.
The best trade winds are during winter June/ July when the South Easterlies blow constantly at 15 – 25 knots but there can also be some good winds May & Aug.
The water temps during this period are around 23 – 35 deg C during winter and daytime air temps of around 22 deg C (remember it is the middle of winter in the Southern Hemisphere!)
If you are heading over to windsurf you can put your gear on the ferry. The trip is about 27 kms east of Cairns or about 45 mins on the high-speed cat.
The island is very small in size with no roads and has only one option for accommodation (Green Island Resort) so most people stay in Cairns and commute on the ferry each day.
If you can afford to stay at the resort you can take your gear with you or if you are wanting to try windsurfing for the first-time or refresh your skills they have some basic equipment and offer lessons from the resort.
If you have a friend with a boat and you want a bit of an adventure there are some incredible locations around Green Island on some of the reefs such as Arlington Reef or Vlasoff Cay located about 10km from the island.
If you are out on the island and the wind doesn’t play ball, there are plenty of other activities like snorkelling, glass bottom boat tours, canoe & kayak rentals, island walks or just relaxing around the resort.
As there is no suitable & safe area to rig for kitesurfers it is not possible to kite here.
