Yorkeys Knob Cairns (Far North Queensland)
Yorkeys Knob located just 17 mins drive SW of Cairns, is the go-to location for kitesurfing, windsurfing and wingfoiling for Cairns locals.
This area is best suited to intermediate riders who are looking for some bump-and-jump as the water can get choppy with a reasonable shore break. There was also a strong current present running along the beach when I sailed there.
If you are looking for flat water sailing, the mouth of the Barron River (about a 15 min walk to the south) offers exceptional conditions in mid to low tide.
Access & Launching
The best rigging and launching area is at the southern end of Sims Esplanade where there is lovely green grass and big shady trees & palms.
The sandy beach is very wide so there is plenty of room for kiters to rig lines and launch safely.
Kite Rite Australia have a small shed at the rigging area and offer by-the-hour, single & multi-day kitesurfing lessons with gear rental.
Best Wind Directions
The trade winds are most consistent here from May to November however the water is warm all-year-round so suitable whenever the wind blows. The best wind directions are from NNE around to SSE with the best directions being S to SE. Northerly’s are said to be too weak to be worth the effort.
The local’s will tell you there are no hazards and that they have never seen any crocs or had any serious stings from jelly fish however this is a spot where crocs can be found and poisonous jelly fish can be prevalent.
From the months of October through to end May it is recommended you wear a stinger suit which is basically a lycra suit that covers the entire body including a hood on your head. Some of the locals brave it with just a lycra top and board shorts.
