Abilities

Robe second ramp and town beach is suited to most sailors wanting to progress or even advanced sailors. The shape of the bay lends itself to finding a spot to match your comfort level. Closer to third ramp the conditions can get more challenging, where as closer to the town-end the conditions are favourable for foiling, and learning to water start etc. Heading further, to sail between 2nd and 3rd ramp is easy. Those in a all-wheel drive SUV or 2wd car should probably head to 2nd ramp then access the beach, the beach can be driven on in a normal car from second ramp towards 3rd ramp. Those with a 4wd, can exit at third ramp.

Sailing

All types of sailing, foiling, SUP and surfing are catered for at Robe Beach.

Seasons

Robe works all year round, but in the winter tends to depend of the weather systems at the time. In the warmer spring and summer season, October thru to March, there tends to be a sea breeze from the south east, which can be backed up by what ever current weather system is moving through. Even in the summer the water tends to be cool, so depending on what you are used to a spring suit is recommended. The area experiences a phenomena known as the Great South Australian Coastal Upwelling System, which causes cooler nutrient rich waters to rise. This in part is why the south-easterly sea breeze can establish so well.

Rigging

At all locations on long beach you will have to rig on the sand in the car parks or on the beach. That is except for if you sail at town beach in a westerly.

Launching

Where ever you decide to sail on Robe beach the launch will be from the gently sloping beach, further out there are some shifting sand bars, which move with time. You will need to be comfortable with launching in shore break, and depending on the wind and final location along the beach the launch can be cross-offshore to cross shore. Launching a foil here is possible, we would recommend you move along towards 2nd ramp, to find a launch spot that you are comfortable with.

Car Parking

In the offical carpark at 2nd ramp, there is parking for approximately 15 cars, and a toilet. If the car park is full there is the option to park on the beach, which would be preferred if you are sailing.

Where to Stay

Robe Accommodation Options

Robe is a small and quaint village and is a popular holiday destination during summer, so there is a reasonable selection of accommodation options. There are a couple of caravan/holiday parks (also offering self-cater cabins), a few motel/motor inn’s, several holiday homes and Bed n Breakfasts in Robe. An alternative is to stay at Beachport if you are also wanting to wave sail at Rivoli Bay or flat water blast on Lake George. If you want to take your pet, there are only a couple of options with The Robetown Motor Inn (allows pets on non-holiday periods) being the cheapest otherwise there are a few private holiday homes that will allow pets.
