Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Australia has been renowned as a fabulous place for windsurfing, wingfoiling & kitesurfing.
It is approx 94 km (1:15 drive) north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast and consists of beautiful golden sandy surf beaches and a spectacular broadwater river with crystal clear blue water and white sandy bottom.
The area caters for most disciplines of sailing apart from big wave riding including flat water blasting, bump & jump, foiling and small wave riding.
The most popular spots for launching in Caloundra are:
Ayliff Park – this spot is probably the best spot in the broadwater in a SE, NE, S & E breeze. It is suitable for beginners and offers flat water for wingfoiling, windsurfing & kitesurfing.
Happy Valley – this spot is located at the entrance to the river. It is suited more to intermediate to advanced kiters, wingfoilers & windsurfers and works best in a S & SE breeze.
Upstream in the broadwater at Golden Beach there is an excellent area for beginner windsurfers & kitesurfers.
For Non-Sailors
Whilst Caloundra is a great place for windsurfing, wingfoiling and kitesurfing, thousands of holiday makers visit Caloundra each year for many other reasons. Swimming, surfing, bike riding, tourist attractions are just a few of the other things to do in Caloundra.

1 Review on “Caloundra (QLD Australia)”
I just love Caloundra! So far from all of the places I have stayed to sail I enjoy this place more than any other. At the time of writing this review I am a beginner intermediate wing foiler and I find the water to be safe, clean and really warm which is ideal for someone that spend a lot of time in the water. The town has a really nice vibe and particularly in the Golden Beach area where we camp. This is a go-to place for me whenever I am on the Sunshine Coast.
