Golden Beach in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast is a fabulous spot for people to learn kitesurfing due to the large shallow areas and lots of sand bars to retreat to and take a break.
This spot works on either a NE or SE breeze depending on which way the tide is running; that is it works on an outgoing tide from the NE or a SE as the tide comes in.
Sand bars are exposed at low tide making providing flat water to learn on and even at high tide it is generally no deeper than knee to waist plus there is very little tidal current this far up the inlet.
This spot is not suited to foiling as it is too shallow. Check out Ayliffe Park about 1km back toward Caloundra where you will find all of the local wing dingers plus some foiling kiters & windsurfers.
Access, Rigging & Launching
The rigging & launching area is located on the Esplanade opposite the the Chill Cafe 89 on the sandy beach; drive down Onslow Street to the end of the road and turn left onto the Esplanade and you will see it to the right. There is road-side car parking along the beachfront.
Rigging & launching from the beach can be a bit challenging for kiters if there are people around on the beach in which case self-launching and landing is a big no-no. At low tide the sand bars present some additional opportunities for rigging and launching.
