North Broulee Beach, South Coast (NSW, Australia)
Broulee is located about 20km (20 mins drive) south of Bateman’s Bay on the NSW South Coast (or about 4 hours drive south of Sydney).
North Broulee Beach is an ideal place for windsurfers & kitesurfers wanting some bump-and-jump on the coast and some nice long flat runs over to Broulee Island.
This isn’t really a wave spot as the waves are mostly shore-break however the NE wind is typically more consistent and stronger here than other parts of the coast including Bateman’s Bay and Moruya.
The water can get quite choppy here in the stronger breezes whereas Tomakin River Mouth (just a few kms north) is substantially flatter.
Access, Rigging & Launching
Drive along Coronation Drive at Broulee and park opposite Gladys Street.
For windsurfers, there is a grassy area behind the dunes opposite the surf shop and then a short walk along a sandy track to the beach.
For kitesurfers the beach is a reasonable size although can be limited at very high tides.
If you’ve got kids, its a good swimming spot at the mouth of the Candlagan Creek at the Northern end of North Broulee Beach, where you can just walk couple hundred metres down beach and start blasting.
Potential Hazards
Don’t try to kite on any wind with WEST in it as you may end up a long way from where you want to be. Kiters mostly sail here in a NE.
Where To Stay
If you are wanting to stay locally, Broulee Caravan Park (which is also pet friendly) is just down the road from the launching spot. Tomakin also has a couple of caravan parks; Barlings Beach Holiday Park and Ingenio Holidays Tomakin.
Alternatively, if you are wanting to base yourself somewhere to check out the area, Bateman’s Bay has a lot more facilities for tourists.
Kitesurfing Services
If you are interested in trying kitesurfing or improving your skills, The Kite Bus runs kitesurfing lessons in and around the Batemans Bay area. They also offer kitesurfer rentals for those needing to rent gear. In addition, if you are looking for someone to ride with, they offer ride days and downwinders for experienced kiters with their own gear.
