Windsurfing & Wing Foiling at Bauer’s Landing, Bowen
Bauer’s Landing is a historic landmark located on Wentworth Street, to the SE of Bowen township.
The water here is clear and blue and suited to intermediate & above windsurfers and wing foilers. Kitesurfing is also possible here but most people kite from front beach.
When the wind blows from the SE (or S), it provides clean wind and due to the deeper water, it is pretty flat with a few rolling swells that can be fun to ride on.
Access, Rigging & Launching
There is a dirt track that runs along the edge of the water. You can either launch from the point or anywhere along the dirt track where you can find access to the water.
The shoreline is made up of small rocks so booties would be a good idea here.
As the SE wind is pretty much cross-shore here there is very little shore break making launching easy.
The water drops off steeply so this is a great spot for foilers.
Potential Hazards
Beginners, need to beware as you may get pushed back into Front Beach passed the jetty by the cross-shore breeze.
Be aware the Mossman river/burr grass as it can create pin holes in your kites/wings.
At lower tides, booties will be your friend if you have soft feet for walking on the rocks.
Like most beaches in Far North Queensland, there are a number of potential hazards including poisonous (and deadly) jelly fish (prevalent from Oct to end May), crocodiles & sharks (all year round but not quite as prevalent).
Also be aware that there are a lot of large turtles in the area so keep an eye out for them on the surface and avoid colliding with them.
