Bowen - The Don River Mouth (QLD, Australia)
Kitesurfing & Windsurfing at The Don River Mouth, Bowen
Locals head to this spot in the afternoons as the easterly sea breezes kick in and swing the predominant wind from SE (cross shore) to SSE (cross on-shore), tunnelling the wind right into the mouth.
The best tides are 2 hours, either side of high and low tide resulting in sandbars and perfectly flat water.
At low tide the channel becomes pretty narrow and shallow so foiling may not be an option?
Windsurfers who can pull tight gybes would also enjoy the amazing flat water for a bit of speed sailing.
Potential Hazards
The main hazards here are striking sandbars and getting dragged out to sea by the tidal current. However if you spend a bit of time dragging your butt in the water this river can house the odd crocodile so be very aware of this. The locals will tell you they have never seen on in the area but there is always a first time!
Lessons & Equipment Hire
Smile Kitesurfing offer supervised hire of kitesurfing and wingfoiling gear. They also offer private & group lessons and day tours to the Whitsundays.
