Kitesurfing & windsurfing at Stone Island, Bowen
Stone Island is located about 2km from the mainland at Bowen in QLD. You can either sail there or charter a boat to get out there. Smile Kitesurfing sometimes do excursions out there.
This spot works in a SE or NE breeze.
Once it there it is worth taking a look around but be mindful and respectful as it is a privately owned island.
The sand spit that just out from the western side of this island protects the water on the leeward side delivering perfectly flat water.
Access
There are only 2 ways to get here, by boat & launch from the sandy beach on the island or sail there from either Kings Beach, Bauer’s Landing or Front Beach (what can take 30 to 40 mins).
Potential Hazards
If you are going to sail out there, you are crossing some relatively open water. Wind strengths & swell can be a lot greater away from the mainland. It is recommended you only do this is you have a sailing buddy or someone watching out for you.
Like most beaches in Far North Queensland, there are a number of potential hazards including poisonous (and deadly) jelly fish (prevalent from Oct to end May), crocodiles & sharks (all year round but not quite as prevalent).
Also be aware that there are a lot of large turtles in the area so keep an eye out for them on the surface and avoid colliding with them.
