Wing Foiling, Kiting & Windsurfing at Pacific Park
Pacific Park (also referred to as Oatland Esplanade) on the Gold Coast in Queensland is a regular hangout for kitesurfing, wing foiling and the odd windsurfer.
The clean stretch of water is not as good as Anglers Park but the kitesurfers in particular like to hang around on the leeward side of Kite island which is really just a big flat sand bar, for some lovely flat water sailing in a southerly
It is a nice wide stretch of water across the broad water with small chop in a solid breeze, ideal for blasting and bump-and-jump.
Suited To
The water here is reasonably well protected and doesn’t get too rough so it is suited to beginners and up. There is virtually no shore break so it would be easy to stay close to shore when taking those first steps. Having Kite Island just a short ride across the broad water also provide a good place for a rest & refuge if required.
Best Wind Directions
This spot works in a S, SE, N & NE breeze and is best when the wind is against the tide but can also work in wind with tide.
The windy season here is during the summer months from October to March.
Water
The water here is mostly blue and clear and temperatures here ranges from around 20 deg C during winter to 27 deg C during summer. So most of the time wetsuits are optional particularly during summer.
It is generally pretty flat but can chop up a bit in a strong southerly however the closer you get to Kite Island, the smoother the water becomes.
Access, Rigging & Launching
Access via Oatland Esplanade. Here you will find plenty of free parking and a nice grassy rigging area right next to your car park. For kiters the rigging area is quite wide. There is a small beach to launch from with little to no shore break.
Hazards
The main hazards here is the large sandbar on the northern end of Kite Island. The water is pretty clear so it is reasonably obvious as you approach it, but always do with caution until you are sure you will clear it (particularly those on a foil).
The broad water is know for the odd shark but they are not seen very often due to the amount of boat traffic but just be aware.
