Altona Beach (Victoria, Australia)
Kitesurfing at Altona Beach on Port Phillip Bay
Altona Beach is one of Melbourne’s best kiteboarding locations.
This spot works well in a E, SE, SW and S (onshore) breeze and is ideal for flat water kiting in the shallows closer to shore where the water is protected by a big sandbar or bump-and-jump on the other side of the bar.
Due to the shallowness of the water for a long way out, it is an ideal location for intermediate to advanced kitesurfers however it could also work for beginners who are being assisted by a more advanced sailor.
The bottom is generally nice and sandy so standing up in the shallows is easy.
One of the down-sides of this spot is it can get very busy like West St Kilda so if you don’t like sailing amongst crowds this might not be the spot for you. See other options for Port Phillip Bay here.
Access & Launching
Altona Beach is 18 km (15 – 30 mins depending on traffic) to the west of Melbourne on Port Phillip Bay.
There is a dedicated water sports area at the end of the Esplanade and start of the Bay Trail W. Here you will find a sealed car park,
Another downside of this spot is a relatively small area to launch and land with nearby obstacles such as power lines, houses, bushes & trees.
Please be sure to use assistance when launching and landing and walk out some way before taking off.
